In Vientiane there were no fast-food restaurants and very little trash. The stores did a thriving business. Many of us had our clothes made at the Indian tailor shop near the “fountain-without-water” which was a concrete fountain in the middle of a traffic circle that we never saw water running in. We ordered chocolate brown or dark green shirts and pants with zipper pockets on the left sleeves and often on the outside lower legs, like you would find in a flight suit. I believe that we found this arrangement to be functional when we flew and also thought it gave us some credibility if we told snoopy foreign journalists that our job in Laos was to be forest rangers. I’m told some of the guys were approached but I never was. One thing I quickly learned is that Asians do not have much of a butt, so they don’t allow for our “rear-ends” when they make clothes. I later had the same problem in Indonesia.
